Tuesday morning September 11th my Dad and I went out for breakfast at a local truck stop. As we walked in we saw the pictures of one tower of the World Trade Center on fire. Moments later we watched as a second plane crased into the second tower. Shock, sorrow, helplessness, anger, so many emotions swept over us. A somber quiet comes over us and the people around us. Disbelief, can this really be happening?
In my devotions the next morning I come across Psalm 56 " Be merciful to me, O God, for men hotly pursue me; all day long they press their attack. My slanderers pursue me all day long; many are attacking me in their pride. When I am afraid, I will trust in you. In God, whose word I praise, In God I trust; I will not be afraid..."
In these days of fear and confusion and horror. In these days when we in a very graphic way understand evil and what it means to be attacked. I'm reminded by the psalmist, who knew all to well what attack and pursuit by the enemy meant, that when I am afraid I should put my trust in God. The psalmist confesses his fear and then turns to God the one who is trustworthy, the faithful one.
I don't pretend to be immune from fear these days or to even begin to understand all of where these events may lead. But this I know, there is a God who is faithful and reliable, one in whom I can trust, one whose word I can believe. Today is the day to turn our hearts to Jesus, the Savior who has come to set his people free. May we as a nation turn our hearts back to Jesus and seek his help as we simply put our trust in Him.
Lord Jesus, how we need you to intervene in our lives and in our nation these days. Lord forgive us for our sin, forgive us for the ways we have forgotten you as individuals and as a nation. Forgive me Lord for the many ways I have sought my own will rather than yours. Lord Jesus in your mercy come to us, forgive us, restore us, heal us, by your grace may we again become a people who can truly say "In God We Trust". "Blessed are the people whose God is the Lord" |
